How to Set SMART Goals in 2022

What goals did you set for 2022? Do you find yourself struggling to accomplish your goals? Or maybe you’re someone who didn’t make goals for the new year because you’re still trying to achieve your goals from last year. One thing that is certain, we’ve all recently experienced enough “different” to last us a while. Covid-19 has brought many changes upon the world. People are taking it one day at a time simply because they aren’t sure of what tomorrow will bring. Now here we are, well into 2022, but don’t panic, I have great news for you! If you’re reading this, it means you’ve made it this far. Here is the key for you to set SMART goals for 2022.

The “SMART” goal structure equals great results! George Doran, Arthur Miller, and James Cunningham introduced this system to assist with goal planning. The article written by Doran in 1981, “There’s a S.M.A.R.T. Way to Write Management’s Goals and Objectives,” was originally intended for those individuals working in management positions. However, this method has proven to be accurate when applied to life in general.

A goal must have the following 5 elements:

  1. Specific
Define the goal; it must be clear. For instance, if your goal is to get a new job, you must include the exact type of new job you desire. Change “I want to work at a restaurant” to “I want to work at a restaurant as a cook.”
  1. Measurable
Take steps. Track your progress and success. Imagine what it will feel like once you have achieved your goal.
  1. Attainable
A realistic goal is achievable. If your goal is to improve your typing speed, and you have only typed once in your lifetime, a 1,000-wpm goal may be unrealistic, though anything is possible. The chance of achieving a realistic goal is greater than one that isn’t.
  1. Relevant
Your goal should resonate with your personality. Don’t make goals based on what you see in others. What works for others may not work for you.
  1. Time-bound
Goals need a “start” and an “end” date. Set up a timeline. The goal must be “time bound” – set up a date by which you want to have achieved your targeted goal.

Now that you know this, apply the five S.M.A.R.T. elements to your goal setting. Let’s get it together! Move forward with 2022 and may you accomplish all your goals! If you want to see examples of S.M.A.R.T. goals, check out Indeed’s blog, SMART Goals: Definition and Examples
