EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Process payroll; maintain payroll records; input and review the accuracy of time cards; prepare, review and proofread various internal, State and Federal records, schedules, journals and reports; prepare and calculate taxes, payroll deductions, retroactive pay, sick leave bonuses and taxable fringe benefits; coordinate and transmit direct deposits and deferred compensation and flexible spending account reports; print and distribute payroll checks; coordinate wage levies and assignments with other governmental agencies including the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Employment Development Department (EDD), the Franchise Tax Board (FTB), the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) and any other associated retirement benefit providers; make payroll adjustments and resolve payroll issues as necessary; prepare memos and letters for both internal and external correspondence; coordinate with other City departments on payroll-related issues; perform other related duties as required.
Knowledge of: Materials, equipment, regulations, principles, procedures and/or practices necessary to perform the required duties including but not limited to: basic principles of payroll processing and record-keeping, computerized payroll systems, personal computer software programs, specifically spreadsheets; correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; basic mathematics involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; business letter writing.
Ability to: Meet medical and physical standards for the class; perform and understand basic mathematical computations; use modern office equipment including a computer and a calculator; analyze payroll data; interpret the rules and regulations in State and Federal laws and City Memoranda of Understanding (MOU’s) related to payroll; work with minimal supervision; establish and maintain effective working relations with others.
Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or a GED equivalent, and three (3) years of clerical accounting experience with an emphasis in payroll processing.
